Introduction to Peristaltic Pump Tube

Introduction to Peristaltic Pump Tube

Our Innovapure® tubing for peristaltic pumps has a reputation for reliable perfomance. Tubing has been designed to fit many peristaltic pumps and instrumentation which include:

Pumps: Ismatec™, Gilson®, Watson-Marlow® and Skalar to name a few.

Instruments: Perkin Elmer™, Thermo® ICP instrumentation, flame photometers and many others.

Our range of pump tubing is ideal for research and routine use. A range of raw materials are listed which offer varying degrees of chemical resistance. To check the suitability of the material, a useful chemical compatibility guideline is available.

Immersion Test: We recommend you conduct an immersion test before buying your tubing for critical applications. Place a short length of tubing in a closed pot of the liquid for 48 hours. Examine for swelling, brittleness, signs of attack and other deterioration.

Fluid Solution of Single Use Sytem

What is a single-use assembly? A single-use assembly is a ready-to-use custom-made all-in-one solution made from different plastic components that are assembled into one whole, based on a customer-specific design. Assemble yourself or ready-to-use? Companies in the (bio)pharmacy and life science industry sometimes assemble their own single-use process systems. This of course has to happen securely. If the connection between components is not made correctly, it can lead to cross-contamination or leakage. Through this the safety and quality of the end-product could be in danger, and the production process could be delayed. Seeing how delays and lost batches are extremely costly, an optimal and 100% safe production process is an absolute must. To eliminate risks with assemblies and guarantee production-security, ready-to-use single-use assemblies offer the solution.

7 benefits of ready-to-use single-use assemblies

  • Shorten working time and thus cost reduction
  • Less risks of cross-contamination and leakage
  • Less production downtime through shorter cleaning time
  • Saving on water- and energy costs
  • Ensuring of the complete supply chain
  • Higher efficiency throughout the entire production process
  • Improvement of production process through quality guarantee and documentation control

Custom Single Use Assembly Design Flow

  • Developing a customized single use assembly starts with a custom design. This is a drawing of the assembly for the specific bioprocess application. Every single use assembly is custom, using Innovapure® tubing or reinforced hose, fittings, closures, filters, sensors, bottles and other components. Each component is identified and listed on the drawing which is sent to the customer for approval prior to production being carried out. Each drawing has a unique number for quality and identification purposes. Once the design is approved by the end user, assembly and packaging is carried out in an ISO-certified cleanroom.

Single Use Assemblies from Innovapure®

  • Sterile tube assemblies are available with a 10-6 SAL (sterility assurance level)
  • Safe, flexible and quick turnaround backed with a robust supply chain.
  • Complete product traceability.
  • Large component library to choose from.
  • Documented quality systems compliant with ISO 9001 and ISO13485.

Innovapure® provides a combination of different components that can be customized to your requirements. Through a broad range of tubing and single-use components combined across an open architecture design, we work with you to create a sterile and dependable fluid path customised to your bioprocessing requirements. Each of our single-use assemblies are manufactured in-house and are lot traceable throughout our process. To ensure our single-use technology comes ready to use, and meets the requirements set by cGMP guidelines, lot traceability of each component can be made available as part of our detailed documentation. Assembly and packaging are carried out in our ISO 14644-1 Class 7 Cleanroom manufacturing sites. Sterile tube assemblies are available with a 10-6 SAL and a two year sterility shelf life, validated in compliance with ANSI/AAMI/ISO 11137 VDmax 25 methodology.

Guideline of Tube Selection

Guideline of Tube Selection

In choosing the right tubing for your application there are several factors to consider. Listed to the right are questions which will help direct you in the selection of the proper tubing for your specific application. It is required to test tubing under the actual service conditions prior to specifying a particular tubing formulation. Assistance in tubing selection is available from our worldwide network of authorized tubing distributor. You may also obtain detailed information on how to select tubing against different chemicals from our chemical compatibility guideline. For more details get in contact whith a technical person from Innovapure.

Things to consider when selecting a peristaltic tubing?

  • Deliver aggressive liquid or organic solvent: Use the chemical compatibility table from the link below to choose the right material.
  • When working with suction lift or pressure: Select tubing with thicker wall thickness.
  • Viscous liquids: Select tubing with thicker wall thickness and bigger inner diameter.
  • High precision requirement: Select the tubing with the smallest inner diameter that can meet the flow rate requirement.
  • If precision requirement is not very high: Select tubing with bigger inner diameter to decrease the speed of the drive which can decrease the wear of the tubing and prolong the service life of the tubing.
  • Tubing bears pressure: Thinner wall thickness bears less pressure. Tubing with bigger inner diameter bears less pressure than tubing with smaller inner diameter with the same wall thickness. The pressure bearing ability in intermittent conditions is better than in continuous conditions.

Chemical resistance of tubings

  • You may also obtain detailed information on how to select tubing against different chemicals from our chemical compatibility guideline
  • You should always test the tubing with your chemicals before using it in your production. Temperature, pressure and concentrations can affect the shelf life. It is user's duty to judge suitability of tubing purchased.

Factors which influence the flow rates

  • Viscosity: The maximum viscosity a peristaltic pump can handle is about 2000 cps. The higher the viscosity, the lower the flow rate. It is recommended to use a tubing with a wall thickness of 2.4 mm or larger and a larger inner diameter than if you were pumping water.
  • Suction Lift: A suction lift exists when the liquid is taken from an open to atmosphere tank where the liquid level is below the centerline of the pump suction. The higher the suction lift, the lower the flow rate. When the suction lift is more than 2 meters it will influence the flow rate noticeably.
  • Delivery Lift: The higher the delivery lift, the lower the flow rate. The delivery lift influence the flow rate less than the suction lift.
  • Tubing: New tubing has higher flow rate than older worn tubing.
  • The flow rate is linear with the revolution per minute of the drive. If the rpm increases 1 time, the flow rate increases approximately 1 time.

Choose the tubing size according to your flow requirements

  • Under each peristaltic pump you will find a table with tubing sizes and flow rates which makes it easier for you to choose the apropriate tubing size.
  • Refer to below table to decide Tubing specifications: WT - wall thickness; ID - inner diameter; OD - outer diameter.
